SLC Guidance for Professionals
Practical guidance for early years professionals in Barnsley on identifying, supporting and referring children with speech, language and communication needs.

Guidance for Professionals
If a child in your setting is giving you cause for concern around their speech, language and communication development, there are a number of steps you can take.
- Consider undertaking a WELLCOMM assessment — it is important to consider whether the child is below age related expectations and whether universal strategies would support them.
- Discuss any concerns with your setting’s SENDIO (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Inclusion Officer) and the child’s parents.
- Review the child’s communication environment — are there universal strategies (dummy-free hours, modelling language, giving time to respond, simple instructions, visual supports) that could support the whole group?
- Access training through the Barnsley Speech & Language Therapy training page.
- If targeted intervention is required, speak to a member of the Early Years Quality team at EYQualityteam@barnsley.gov.uk.
